Were the writers of the old testament correct in calling natural disasters acts of GOD?

I believe that almost all the the disasters recorded in the old testament were natural acts that just happen to take place during a important period of time in the Israelis lives. Take for example they had no word for Volcanoes so they would describe them as fire and brimstone falling from the skies.
