Top 5 UK January Sales Shopping Trip Destinations by Emma Louise Hartley
Santa Claus has been and gone and it is now time to find the best places for burning some cash in the January sales and organize a shopping trip. For years the January sales have taken place throughout Europe but no more so than the United Kingdom. Last of the big spenders, the streets of the UK are just as busy if not busier in January. Some people will wait hours outside shops waiting for them to open there doors to get the best of the sales. So do not miss out, head to one of these Top 5 January sales shopping destinations and join the crowds.
London
Creme de la creme, London is top spot for shopping trips any time of year but especially so in January. You have endless options in London and you will need a good long weekend if not longer to get through it all! Convent Gardens is a popular choice with a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
Oxford Street has a huge mix of high street shops which sees over 200 Million people a year passing through. Heading on to Regent street for a bit of up market window shopping if all else, Liberty’s and one of the most famous toy shops in the World “Hamley’s” is here.
Knightsbridge is one of the prettiest areas of Central London where you will find Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Christian Dior, Prada, Gucci, Armani, Fendi and Dolce & Gabbana. For the serious fashion lover the place to be seen in is of course Bond Street, Donna Karan, Louis Vuitton, Nicole Farhi, Armani, Jimmy Choo and Ralph Lauren, Tiffany’s and the Mulberry stores can all be found here.
Edinburgh
If it is the North of the UK you are heading for then Edinburgh is Second choice for a great shopping trip. Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital city and in recent years been a popular city break destination.
Edinburgh has a wide range of stores for all tastes from up market designer stores such as Harvey Nichols, Jenners and House of Fraser, to the high street department stores of John Lewis, Next, Marks & Spencer, Gap and Debenhams, down to unique smaller boutiques.
Just our of the City are 3 out of town shopping centers, Ocean Terminal, the Gyle Shopping Centre (which are undercover) and Fort Kinnaird. Princes Street is the most impressive setting in Edinburgh and is the old traditional part of the city with panorama views across Princes Street Gardens to the majestic Castle and Old Town. Main department stores such as Jenners, British Home Stores, Debenhams, House of Fraser and Marks & Spencer are altogether here.
Leeds
Known by many as the Knightsbridge of the North, Leeds is a fantastic city to spend your dosh. The city is stylish and you will walk out of one shop to walk into another as they seem to flow into one another.
British designers Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood have stores in the Victoria Quarter, one of the best shopping centers in the area. Head over the the Corn Exchange which is a big Grade I listed building which houses independent designers.
One of Leeds best kept secrets is Granary Wharf which is underground below the railway and it is here you will find cafe bars, street entertainment and market stalls. Kirkgate is Europe’s largest indoor market housed in Edwardian buildings with over 800 stalls selling everything from foods to clothing. Just out of the city is the award winning “White Rose Center” housing 2 floors of high street shops such as BHS, Next, Primark, W H Smith, Zara and over 100 other stores, restaurants and offers free parking.
Manchester
Manchester is another main city shopping destination in the North of England about an hours drive from Leeds. Home to one of Europe’s largest shopping malls, the Arndale Centre which boasts over 240 shops and major department stores and numerous restaurants and fast food outlets to accommodate the hungry shoppers.
If it is a bargain you are looking for then head out to the new Lowry Outlet Mall with over 80 shops, selling excess stock at up to 70% off RRP and a 400 seat food court with 9 food outlets, coffee shops and restaurants.
One of Manchester’s main shopping areas is the Trafford Centre. Just 5 mins out of the city center, a choice of 230 stores along 3 miles of granite and marble boulevards range from high street stores to designer shops. The Centre’s dining area hosts 36 restaurants. It is also home to the Odeon 20 screen cinema, one of the largest in the UK.
Brighton
Funky shopping is what Brighton is all about with its many chic boutiques, antique shops and inspirational art you will not get bored. Best place to start is at The Lanes, unique boutiques and creative independent shops is a paradise for some retail therapy.
Heading on to the modern Churchill Square shopping center to find high street shops and name brands within just a 5 minute walk from the beach and only 10 minutes from the station. Restaurants and bars are aligned along the sea front for you to take in the sea air. Brighton Marina offers some fabulous savings of up to 50% on high street stores.
You’ll also find a huge range of home ware and sports goods, footwear and accessories as well as the largest Yacht chandlery in the South of England holds around 1600 yachts. Take time out with a walk along the beach and a break in one of the cafe bars and tea rooms along the sea front.
